Applied Physics Laboratory

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), located in Laurel, Maryland, is a not-for-profit, university-affiliated research center employing 4,000 people. APL serves as a technical resource for the Department of Defense, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and other Government agencies. The Lab is a research and development organization rather than an academic division of JHU. However, its on-site APL Education Center offers part-time graduate programs through Hopkins’ Whiting School of Engineering for staff and students from the surrounding Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area.
