Applet

An applet is a software component that runs in the context of another program, for example a web browser. An applet usually performs a very narrow function that has no independent use. Hence, it is an application -let. The term was introduced in AppleScript in 1993. An applet is distinguished from "subroutine" by several features. First, it executes only on the "client" platform environment of a system, as contrasted from "servlet." As such, an applet provides functionality or performance beyond the default capabilities of its container (the browser). Also, in contrast with a subroutine, certain capabilities are restricted by the container. An applet is written in a language that is different from the scripting or HTML language which invokes it. The applet is written in a compiled language, while the scripting language of the container is an interpreted language, hence the greater performance or functionality of the applet. Unlike a "subroutine," a complete web component can be implemented as an applet.

Ein Applet ist ein Programm, das im Rahmen eines anderen Programms betrieben wird, zum Beispiel in einem Webbrowser.Ein Applet verfügt nur über eine begrenzte Anzahl von Funktionen, die keine eigenständige Funktionalität bieten. So erklärt sich sein Name, der übersetzt soviel wie „Progrämmchen“ bedeutet (Diminutiv von engl. „Application“ = Anwendung, Programm). Anders als ein Programm kann ein Applet nicht als eigene Anwendung betrieben werden. Vom „Container“, also dem Programm, in dessen Kontext das Applet läuft, werden dessen Möglichkeiten beschränkt. Beispielsweise kann ein aus dem Internet geladenes Applet nicht auf den Hauptspeicher des ausführenden Computers zugreifen und hat nur die Möglichkeit, Daten in Cookies darauf zu speichern.

Aplet (ang. applet - zdrobnienie od aplikacja) - zwykle niewielki program  napisany w taki sposób, by:mógł zostać osadzony w stronie WWW wprost i wykonany przez przeglądarkę internetową na komputerze, na którym jest ona uruchomiona - najczęściej jest to kod JavaScript, ale też JScript, VBScript, Tcl, kontrolek ActiveX (stosowanych tylko w przeglądarce MS Internet Explorer z ogólnym zaleceniem ich wyłączenia ze względu na bezpieczeństwo) lub przez odwołanie za pomocą polecenia np. JavaScriptu był wczytany przez przeglądarkę z serwera www i uruchomiony w środowisku JVM (Java Virtual Machine) komputera, na którym funkcjonuje przeglądarka - w tym przypadku są to aplety Java, wykonywane w tzw. piaskownicy

Con il termine applet (combinazione di application e gadget e quindi sostantivo femminile) si indica un programma che viene eseguito come "ospite" nel contesto di un altro programma, per questo detto container, su un computer client. In altre parole un'applet è un programma progettato per essere eseguito all'interno di un programma-container, ne consegue che l'applet non può essere eseguita indipendentemente da un altro programma.
