Aphthous ulcer
An aphthous ulcer or canker sore is a type of
mouth ulcer which presents as a painful open
sore inside the
mouth, caused by a break in the
mucous membrane. The condition is also known as aphthous stomatitis, and alternatively as "Sutton's Disease," especially in the case of multiple or recurring ulcers.

griech. άφθη; von griech. άπτω brennen, andere, ebenfalls gültige Schreibweise: Aphte) ist eine schmerzhaft entzündete Stelle der
Schleimhaut des
Zahnfleischs, der
Mundhöhle oder der
Zunge und in Einzelfällen auch anderer Schleimhäute, z.B. im Genitalbereich. Es handelt sich dabei um ein
Ulkus. Beim gleichzeitigen Auftreten mehrerer solcher Stellen spricht man vom Krankheitsbild der
Mundfäule (Stomatitis aphthosa). Treten Aphthen häufig wiederkehrend auf, spricht man von chronisch rezidivierender Aphthose.
