An aphthous ulcer ( ), also known as a canker sore, is a type of mouth ulcer that presents as a painful open sore inside the mouth or upper throat characterized by a break in the mucous membrane. Its cause is unknown, but they are not contagious. The condition is also known as aphthous stomatitis (stomatitis is inflammation of the mucous lining), and alternatively as Sutton's Disease, especially in the case of major, multiple, or recurring ulcers.

Eine Aphthe (sprich: Afte; Transliteration von griech. , vom Verb hapto „entfachen“) ist eine schmerzhafte, von einem entzündlichen Randsaum umgebene Erosion der Schleimhaut des Zahnfleischs, der Mundhöhle, der Tonsillen oder der Zunge und in Einzelfällen auch anderer Schleimhäute, z. B. im Genitalbereich. Es handelt sich dabei um ein Ulcus mit weißlichem Fibrinbelag. Beim gleichzeitigen Auftreten mehrerer solcher Stellen im Rahmen einer Primärinfektion durch das Herpes-simplex-Virus spricht man vom Krankheitsbild der Mundfäule (Stomatitis aphthosa oder Gingivostomatitis herpetica). Treten Aphthen häufig wiederkehrend auf, spricht man von chronisch rezidivierender Aphthose. Die Häufigkeit (Prävalenz) beträgt 5 bis 21 Prozent.

Afte eller aftös stomatit är blåsor i munnen, som ser ut som vita eller vitgula små gropar i slemhinnan och är mycket ömma, vilka kan vara till besvär vid tandborstning och även vid förtäring. Blåsorna växer sakta, brister för att sedan utvecklas till ofta mycket smärtsamma sår. Den omgivande slemhinnan är inflammerad och ofta ilsket röd.
