Aosta

Aosta (French: Aoste) is the principal city of the bilingual Aosta Valley in the Italian Alps, 110km north-northwest of Turin. It is situated near the Italian entrance of the Mont Blanc Tunnel, at the confluence of the Buthier and the Dora Baltea, and at the junction of the Great and Little St. Bernard routes. Aosta is not the capital of the province, as these functions are shared by the region and the communes.

Aosta (französisch Aoste) ist die Hauptstadt der Region Aostatal in den italienischen Alpen. Nahe der Grenze zur Schweiz und zu Frankreich finden sich in den umliegenden Gebirgsmassiven die höchsten Berge Europas wie das Matterhorn (Cervino), der Mont Blanc und der Monte Rosa (Mont Rose). Aosta liegt etwa 583 Meter über dem Meeresspiegel und erstreckt sich auf 21 Quadratkilometern. Die Stadt hat 34.672 Einwohner (Stand am 31. Dezember 2006).

Aosta to miejscowość i gmina we Włoszech, stolica regionu Valle d'Aosta.Wg danych na rok 2004 gminę zamieszkuje 33 926 osób, 1615,5 os./km².Historia miasta: zostało ono założone w 25 p.n.e. przez Oktawiana Augusta jako miasto obronne nazwane Augusta Praetoria. W roku 451 stało się siedzibą biskupstwa. W X wieku stało się stolicą Franków. Od XI wieku w rękach Sabaudów, XIII-XIV wieku w granicach księstwa Sabaudii. W 1556 było bezskutecznie oblegane przez wojska J. Kalwina. Od 1860 włączone do zjednoczonych Włoch.
