Anti-submarine warfare

Anti-submarine warfare (ASW or in older forms A/S) is a branch of naval warfare that uses surface warships, aircraft or other submarines to find, track and then damage or destroy enemy submarines. Like many forms of warfare, successful anti-submarine warfare depends on a mix of superior technology, experience and luck. Sophisticated sonar equipment for first detecting, and then tracking, the target submarine is a key element of ASW. To destroy submarines both the torpedo and mine are used, launched from air, surface and underwater platforms.

ASW (Anti Submarine Warfare) è la definizione di sistemi hardware e software per la guerra anti sommergibile. Un sistema ASW ha il compito di gestire i sensori subacquei (Sonar) e le armi sia di difesa, quali siluri e superficie/supeficie (tipo il MILAS), che sistemi difensivi, tipo il Sistema antisiluro SLAT. Attualmente le fregate classe Horizon e le fregate del programma FREMM sono dotate di un sistema completo di guerra anti-sommergibile. La portaerei Cavour ha invece un sistema ASW limitato alla sola difesa, tramite il sistema antisiluro SLAT.

Antiubåtkrigføring, fra engelsk anti-submarine warfare, forkortet ASW (på norsk noen ganger AU, AntiUbåt), er termen som brukes for å beskrive deteksjon av, jakt på og eventuell ødeleggelse av fientlige ubåter. ASW-systemer finnes for både fly, helikoptre og skip, samt ubåter.
