Anti-lock braking system

An anti-lock braking system (ABS) (translated from German, Antiblockiersystem) is a system on motor vehicles which prevents the wheels from locking while braking. The purpose of this is to allow the driver to maintain steering control under heavy braking and, in some situations, to shorten braking distances (by allowing the driver to hit the brake fully without the fear of skidding or loss of control). Disadvantages of the system include increased braking distances under certain conditions and the creation of a "false sense of security" among drivers who do not understand the operation and limitations of ABS.

LAntiblockiersystem, abrégé en 'ABS (terme allemand que l'on peut traduire par « système anti-blocage »), est un système d'assistance au freinage utilisé sur les véhicules roulants, empêchant les roues de se bloquer pendant les périodes de freinage intense. Das Antiblockiersystem (ABS), in der StVZO „Automatischer Blockierverhinderer“ (ABV) genannt, ist ein in Verkehrsmitteln verwendetes technisches System zur Verbesserung der Verkehrssicherheit. Es wirkt vor allem in Gefahrensituationen, indem es bei starkem Bremsen (Vollbremsung) der Blockierneigung der Räder durch Regelung des Bremsdrucks in kurzen Intervallen entgegenwirkt. Das durchschnittliche menschliche Reaktionsvermögen reicht in aller Regel nicht aus, um in gefährlichen Situationen die Bremskraft richtig zu dosieren. Das ABS in modernen Kraftfahrzeugen ist dagegen in der Lage, das Bremsverhalten jedes einzelnen Rades nahezu optimal zu steuern. Es bewirkt in erster Linie nicht eine Verkürzung des Bremsweges, der sich in manchen Fällen sogar verlängern kann, sondern sorgt hauptsächlich dafür, dass das Fahrzeug im besten Falle während des Bremsvorgangs vollständig steuerbar bleibt und nicht ausbricht.

ABS (niem. Antiblockiersystem; ang. Anti-Lock Braking System) to układ stosowany w pojazdach mechanicznych w celu zapobiegania blokowaniu się kół podczas hamowania, jako element układu hamulcowego. System ten jest zaliczany do grupy systemów Advanced Vehicle Control Systems (albo Automated Highway Systems). Jego bezpośrednim rozwinięciem są systemy ASR. Jest on również wykorzystywany jako element składowy bardziej rozwiniętych systemów jak ESP, czy Adaptive Cruise Control.
