Anthracycline

Anthracyclines are a class of chemotherapeutic agents based upon samine and tetra-hydro-naphthacene-dione. These compounds are used to treat a wide range of cancers, including (but not limited to) leukemias, lymphomas, and breast, uterine, ovarian, and lung cancers.

Anthracycline sind Antibiotika, die als Chemotherapeutika gegen verschiedene Krebsarten eingesetzt werden. Anthracycline wirken, indem sie an Topoisomerase IIa binden. Topoisomerase IIa ist ein Schlüsselenzym der Zellteilung. Wegen des schnellen Wachstums der Krebszellen werden diese stärker gestört als gesunde Zellen. Allerdings werden auch gesunde Körperzellen angegriffen, was zu schweren Nebenwirkungen wie Störungen des Knochenmarks und des Herzens führen kann.
