Animal euthanasia (from Greek, meaning "good death") is the act of humanely putting an animal to death or allowing it to die as by withholding extreme medical measures. Reasons for euthanasia include incurable (and especially painful) conditions or diseases, lack of resources to continue supporting the animal, or laboratory test procedures. Euthanasia methods are designed to cause minimal pain and distress. Euthanasia is distinct from animal slaughter and pest control, which are performed for purposes other than an act of mercy, although in some cases the killing procedure is the same.

Als Einschläferung (Euthanasie) bezeichnet man die schmerzlose Tötung von Tieren. Diese Handlung wird von einem Tierarzt vorgenommen und erfolgt normalerweise durch die Injektion einer tödlichen Dosis eines Narkotikums, wie es in speziell dafür zugelassenen Tötungsmitteln enthalten ist. Der Begriff Einschläferung bzw. Einschläfern ist ein Euphemismus, da es sich nicht um eine Narkose, sondern um eine Tötung handelt.

On appelle euthanasie animale la mise à mort volontaire d'un animal afin de mettre fin à ses souffrances ou à une agonie prolongée. Le terme est aussi couramment employé pour désigner l'abattage d'animaux ayant participé à une étude en laboratoire (prélèvements, recueil de données), dans les élevages d'animaux à fourrure ou dans le cadre de la prévention d'épizooties.
