Anglo American Racers

Anglo American Racers was a Formula One and Champ Car constructor from the USA owned by Dan Gurney and run from the Weslake factory at Rye. They participated in 25 Grands Prix, entering a total of 34 cars. The team was the Formula One arm of All American Racers, an organisation established in Santa Ana, California in 1964, by Dan Gurney, to run sportscars for him to drive in the United States between his Formula 1 commitments with the Brabham team. In that same year, Carroll Shelby, who was running Goodyear tires on his Cobra sportscars, introduced Gurney to the tiremaker because Goodyear wanted to take on Firestone at the Indianapolis 500. Gurney, responsible for bringing Colin Chapman and Lotus to Indianapolis, fielded an AAR Lotus 38 in the 1965 Indianapolis 500. A deal was struck and work began on an IndyCar for 1966. Gurney hired Len Terry, the designer of the Indianapolis-winning Lotus in 1965 and he laid out a mid-engined chassis, baptized Eagle, which would serve for both Formula 1 and Indycar racing. The result was the Eagle-Ford T2G for the US and the Eagle T1G for Formula 1.

Eagle était le nom d'une officine américaine de construction de voitures de compétition automobile fondée par le pilote Dan Gurney. Les Eagle ont été exclusivement utilisées par l'écurie AAR (pour All American Racers ou Anglo American Racers selon le côté de l'Atlantique où elle exerçait) créée par Dan Gurney. Les Eagle ont ainsi disputé le championnat du monde de Formule 1, les championnats américains de monoplace USAC et CART ainsi que le championnat d'endurance IMSA GT. Etant donné que Dan Gurney a à la fois fondé Eagle et AAR, il est d'usage de confondre les deux entités. Toutefois, il ne faut pas oublier qu'en 1968, AAR a engagé à trois reprises une McLaren M7A-client pour pallier le manque de performance de son Eagle vieillissante.

Die beiden Amerikaner Dan Gurney und Carroll Shelby gründeten 1965 die All American Racers. Die Reifenfirma Goodyear fungierte als Geldgeber. Sowohl Gurney als auch Shelby hatten sich einen Namen im internationalen Motosport gemacht. Beide konnten sich bereits in die Siegerlisten der 24 Stunden von Le Mans eintragen und Gurney war außerdem als Grand-Prix-Pilot erfolgreich. Goodyear versuchte durch den Einstieg in ein Motorsportteam die langjährige Dominanz von Firestone als Reifenlieferant bei den 500 Meilen von Indianapolis zu brechen. Shelby kehrte dem jungen Team jedoch bald den Rücken und wandte sich wieder eigenen Projekten zu. Unter der Führung von Gurney wurde im englischen Rye (Sussex) ein Parallelunternehmen unter dem Namen Anglo American Racers aufgebaut, um auch in den europäischen Rennserien präsent zu sein. Die Wagen sollten unter der Bezeichnung Eagle an den Start gehen.
