Le terme Anglo-Saxons désigne a posteriori les peuples germaniques (rattachés au rameau ethno-linguistique occidental ou westique des peuples indo-Européens) qui s'installèrent dans l'île de Bretagne (Grande-Bretagne) à partir du début du . En quelques décennies, ils repoussèrent les Bretons dans l'ouest de l'île, forçant certains d'entre eux à s'exiler dans la péninsule armoricaine.

Die Angelsachsen waren ein germanisches Sammelvolk hauptsächlich bestehend aus Sachsen und Angeln. Als gemeinsames Volk treten diese beiden Stämme, mit Splitergruppen bestehend aus Jüten, Friesen und Niederfranken, ab dem 5. Jahrhundert auf.Aus diesen Völkerverbund, später auch Skandinavier, Dänen, und im 11. Jahrhundert frankophone Normannen, bildete sich zuerst eine angelsächsische Kultur heraus, um dann im Verlauf der Zeit und Entwicklung durch die genannten anderen ethnisch-kulturellen Einflüsse, die englische Kultur heraus zubilden (incl. keltischer Erbgüter).

Anglosaxare kallas de germanska folk som migrerade till Storbritannien, i synnerhet England, och blev dominerande där från 300-talet, efter det att romarna dragit sig tillbaka. Namnet kommer av namnen på två av stammarna, anglerna från Angeln (dagens Schleswig-Holstein) och saxarna från Sachsen (motsvarar det nuvarande Niedersachsen) i dagens Nordtyskland.
