island of the
Greek archipelago, the most northerly of the
Cyclades, approximately 10 km (6 miles) south east of
Euboea, and about 3 km (about 2 miles) north of
Tinos. It is nearly 40 km (25 miles) long, and its greatest breadth is 16 km 10 miles. Its surface is for the most part
mountainous, with many fruitful and well-watered
valleys. Andros, the capital, on the east coast, contained about 2000 inhabitants in 1900. The island had about 18,000 inhabitants in (1900). The 1991 census read 8,781. According to the latest Greek census of 2001, the town of Andros still contained 1,508 inhabitants, and the island's total was 10,009. The island is comprised of the municipalities of Andros (pop. 4,107),
Korthio (pop. 2,547), and
Ydrousa (pop. 3,355). Their combined land area is 380.041 km². The largest towns are Ándros, Gávrio, Bátsi, and Órmos Korthíou.

Andros ist eine
Insel im
Griechischen Archipel. Sie ist die nördlichste Insel der
Kykladen und nach
Naxos die zweitgrößte. Durch die Doropassage ist sie von
Euböa getrennt und gleichsam die Fortsetzung dieser Insel. Fläche: 389 km², bis zu 1.000 m hoch, ca. 9.000 Einwohner (2002).Andros wird auf der Westseite von einem Gebirge durchzogen, in dessen östliche Abhänge reich mit Fruchtbäumen und Weinreben bedeckte Täler eingeschnitten sind. Die Landwirtschaft erzeugt besonders Seide, Wein, Oliven, Limonen und Tierprodukte (Schafzucht). Auch die Vogeljagd ist nicht unwichtig.Hauptort ist das gleichnamige Andros, malerisch gelegen auf einer schmalen Landzunge an der Ostküste der Insel. Von dem an der Westküste liegenden Hafenort Gavrion besteht eine regelmäßige Fährverbindung zum Festland (Rafina) und zu den anderen Kykladen. Der überwiegend griechische Tourismus findet vor allem in Batsi, südlich von Gavrion, statt. Aber auch in der Umgebung von Andros-Stadt und in Gavrion. Vor allem am Wochenende besuchen viele Athener Andros. Pauschal ist Andros aber seltener buchbar.

Eubei oddzielona jest Cieśniną Kafirejską.Na zachodzie Andros leży pasmo górskie (do 1000 m wysokości), na którego wschodnich zboczach uprawia się winogrona, oliwki i drzewa owocowe (cytrusy), oprócz tego na wyspie rozwinięta jest hodowla owiec.Głównym miastem jest Andros, malowniczo położone na wąskim paśmie lądu na wschodzie wyspy. Z leżącego na zachodnim wybrzeżu portu Gavrion odbywa się regularna żegluga promowa z greckim lądem (Rafina) i innymi wyspami Cyklad.
