Anaerobic Decomposition

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is the natural process of biological degradation of organic material in the absence of air. An anaerobic digester is a man-made system that harnesses this process to treat waste and produce biogas and anaerobic digestate, a soil-improving material. The biogas can then be converted into heat and electricity. Anaerobic digestion is widely used as a stabilisation process for the treatment of wastewater sludges and organic wastes. The process provides volume and mass reduction of the input material, whilst delivering valuable renewable energy. A biogas plant is an anaerobic digestion system that is designed and operated specifically for the purpose of producing biogas.

Nazwa "Fermentacja metanowa" została nadana przed poznaniem istoty tego procesu i może być myląca. W rzeczywistości jest to zespół przemian biochemicznych które łączy brak tlenu.

Rötningens mekanism består av att anaeroba organismer med tillgång till metaboliserande näringsämnen, såsom kväve och fosfor, bryter ned det organiska materialet. Detta leder till bildning av cellprotoplasma alltmedan kväve omvandlas till organiska syror och ammoniak. Kol frigörs huvusakligen i form av metan och koldioxid, d v s biogas.
