Amsterdam

is the  capital of the Netherlands, and is located in the south of the North Holland province. The city is known for its historic port, the Rijksmuseum, the red-light district (de Wallen), the liberal coffeeshops, and the canals which have led to Amsterdam being termed the "Venice of the North". During the Dutch Golden Age, Amsterdam was one of the most important ports in the world, with innovative developments in trade, and became the leading centre for finance and diamonds.

Amsterdam est la capitale des Pays-Bas (bien que le siège du gouvernement se trouve à La Haye) et la plus grande ville de la province de Hollande septentrionale et des Pays-Bas. L'agglomération compte environ 2 300 000 habitants (appelés Amstellodamois ou Amstellodamiens), elle-même partie d'une conurbation appelée Randstad Holland et qui compte 7 100 000 habitants. La partie la plus ancienne de la ville est bâtie autour d'un réseau concentrique de canaux semi-circulaires reliés entre eux par d'autres canaux perpendiculaires, formant ainsi comme une « toile d'araignée ».

Amsterdam (niederländisch ) ist die Hauptstadt der Niederlande und hat 743.411 Einwohner (Stand 1. Januar 2007), als Agglomeration Groot-Amsterdam ca. 1,5 Mio. (2007). Im Großraum Amsterdam (nördlicher Teil des Verdichtungsraumes Randstad) leben ca. 2,5 Mio. Menschen (2007). Sitz der Regierung ist jedoch das 50 km entfernte Den Haag.
