Amputation

Amputation is the removal of a body extremity by trauma or surgery. As a surgical measure, it is used to control pain or a disease process in the affected limb, such as malignancy or gangrene. In some cases, it is carried out on individuals as a preventative surgery for such problems. A special case is the congenital amputation, a congenital disorder, where  foetal limbs have been cut off by constrictive bands. In some countries, amputation of the hands or feet was or is used as a form of punishment for criminals. Amputation has also been used as a tactic in war and acts of terrorism. In some cultures and religions, minor amputations or mutilations are considered a ritual accomplishment. Unlike many non-mammalian animals, (such as lizards which shed their tails), once removed, human extremities do not grow back. A transplant or a prosthesis are the only options for recovering the loss.

L'amputation est l'ablation d'une extrémité du corps suite à un traumatisme ou un acte chirurgical. Dans le cadre de la chirurgie, elle sert à limiter l'expansion incurable d'affections graves comme par exemple la gangrène. Elle peut être appliquée à titre préventif pour limiter la douleur ou éviter l'apparition d'autres pathologies. Elle est aussi parfois utilisée à titre purement esthétique.

Als Amputation (lat. amputatio) bezeichnet man allgemein die Abtrennung eines Körperteils. Dabei gilt es zwischen der Amputation als chirurgischem Eingriff und der Amputation als Verletzung (Folge eines Unfallmechanismus) zu differenzieren. Die Amputation in Form eines ärztlichen Eingriffs wird durchgeführtals letzte Maßnahme, wenn das Leben des Patienten anders nicht zu retten oder eine Heilung des betroffenen Körperteils nicht zu erwarten ist oderin islamischen Ländern bei der Anwendung der Scharia zur Bestrafung bestimmter Straftaten (Saudi-Arabien, Sudan).

Amputacja (z łac. amputatio), także odjęcie – zabieg operacyjny polegającego na usunięciu narządu lub jego części; nazwa ta jest używana przede wszystkim w odniesieniu do operacji usunięcia kończyny górnej lub dolnej, przebiegającej z przecięciem kości i wytworzeniem kikuta. Wskazaniem do amputacji są m.in. ciężkie przypadki zgorzeli gazowej oraz znaczne uszkodzenia spowodowane urazem. Jako że amputacja jest zabiegiem powodującym trwałe kalectwo, jest stosowana tylko gdy brak innej możliwości leczenia i w sposób na tyle oszczędny, na ile to możliwe (szczególnie przy zabiegach w obrębie dłoni).
