The Amiga is a family of personal computers marketed by Commodore in the 1980s and 1990s. The first model was launched in 1985 as a high-end home computer and became popular for its graphical, audio and multi-tasking abilities. The Amiga provided a significant upgrade from 8-bit computers, such as the Commodore 64, and the platform quickly grew in popularity among computer enthusiasts. The best selling model, the Amiga 500, was introduced in 1987 and became the leading home computer of the late 1980s and early 1990s in much of Western Europe. In North America success was more modest. The Amiga went on to sell approximately six million units. Second generation Amiga systems (the A1200 and the A4000) were released in 1992. However, poor marketing and failure to repeat the technological advances of the first systems meant that the Amiga quickly lost its market share to competing platforms, such as the fourth generation game consoles, Apple Macintosh and IBM PC compatibles.

Der Commodore Amiga (spanisch amiga: Freundin) war ein von Mitte der 1980er bis Anfang/Mitte der 1990er weit verbreiteter Computer, der besonders in seinen Einsteigermodellen (A500 und A1200) als Heimcomputer beliebt war. Für seine Zeit hatte er ausgeprägte Multimediafähigkeiten und ein leistungsfähiges, präemptives Multitasking-Betriebssystem. In der Commodore-Zeit arbeitete er durchgängig mit Prozessoren der Motorola 68000er-Familie.

L’Amiga est une famille d’ordinateur personnel commercialisée par Commodore International entre 1985 et 1994. Le prix modique de l’entrée de gamme et les capacités multimédia plus avancées que les compatibles PC et Macintosh de l’époque l’ont rendu très populaire auprès des amateurs de jeux vidéo et des demomakers. Son système d’exploitation avait la particularité alors exceptionnelle pour l’informatique grand public d’être multitâche préemptif et multimédia. Il reste aujourd’hui encore une référence dans la scène démo, parvenant à surpasser les démos PC lors de l’Assembly 2006.

Amiga var en av de mest populära hemdatorerna under andra halvan av 1980-talet och första halvan av 1990-talet. Tekniken utvecklades av ett företag kallat Hi-Toro och rättigheterna såldes till Commodore. Idag förvaltas varumärket av det amerikanska företaget Amiga Incorporated medan operativsystemet AmigaOS utvecklas av belgiska Hyperion.

Amiga (hiszp. la amiga – przyjaciółka) – popularna marka komputerów produkowanych przez firmę Commodore. Po bankructwie tego ostatniego, marka ta została przejęta przez firmę Escom, następnie przez Gateway. W końcu wyłoniła się samodzielna firma Amiga INC, która po bankructwie sprzedała wszelkie prawa firmie KMOS. W tzw. międzyczasie KMOS zmieniło nazwę na Amiga Inc.
