American Pit Bull Terrier
The American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) is a breed of dog in the terrier group, one of several breeds loosely classified as pit bulls. Ownership of APBTs is controversial, due to publicized media stories of "pit bulls" having attacked children, strangers, and even adults. This has led to the ownership of APBTs and "pit bulls" in general being restricted or banned in many parts of the world. For example, in Ontario, Canada, APBTs were declared to be a significant threat to the public, and were thus banned from the province. Owners of APBTs claim that well-bred APBTs are not aggressive toward humans, and suggest that the problem is due to the breed's appeal to irresponsible segments of society who do not know how to breed or train the dogs.

Height: 18-22 inches.
Weight: 30-70 lbs.
Life Span: 11-13 yrs.
Breed Group: Terriers
Overview
Despite its reputation, the extraordinarily muscled American pit bull terrier can be a wonderful family companion if bred for gentle temperament and trained at a young age. The breed can also be stubborn and aggressive, so early socialization with all kinds of people and animals is crucial.
Appearance
The muscular pit bull terrier has a bricklike shape and powerful jaws. Its short, glossy coat comes in all colors and markings, including brindle, white with patches of color, black, and red.
Grooming & Exercise Needs
The pit bull's short coat needs to be brushed once a week with a rubber brush. This active dog needs a few long walks and some playtime in a secured area daily.
Origins
The American pit bull terrier, a cross between Staffordshire bull terriers and an extinct fighting bulldog, was bred in the 19th century for dogfighting.
Special Alerts
The American pit bull terrier is not suitable for inexperienced dog owners. It can be especially aggressive with other dogs. Prospective owners should avoid selecting puppies from fighting stock. It is especially important to obtain an American pit bull terrier from a reputable breeder, as there are, unfortunately, some who choose to breed the most aggressive animals and then train them to maim or kill. Avoid puppies under seven weeks of age that are sold off the street.
