The American Petroleum Institute, commonly referred to as API, is the main U.S.
trade association for the oil and natural gas industry, representing about 400 corporations involved in
production,
refinement,
distribution, and many other aspects of the industry. The association’s chief functions on behalf of the industry include
advocacy and
negotiation with governmental, legal, and regulatory agencies;
research into economic, toxicological, and environmental effects; establishment and certification of industry standards; and
education outreach.

Das American Petroleum Institute (abgekürzt API) ist der größte
Interessenverband der Öl- und Gasindustrie einschließlich der petrochemischen Industrie in den USA. Dem API gehören ca. 400 Unternehmen an (Stand August 2005).Das Institut äußert sich zu Themen wie der Ausbeutung von Lagerstätten, Ölverbrauch, Steuern, Handel, Umwelt- und Arbeitsschutz. Ein wichtiges Arbeitsgebiet ist die Erarbeitung von technischen Richtlinien und Standards. Der Einfluss des API geht weit über die USA hinaus. Die vom API herausgegebenen technischen Richtlinien sind vergleichsweise umfassend und anspruchsvoll. Die Richtlinien werden nicht von unabhängigen Einrichtungen, sondern von Fachleuten aus dem im Verband zusammengeschlossenen Industriefirmen erarbeitet.
