American Meteorological Society

The American Meteorological Society (AMS) promotes the development and dissemination of information and education on the atmospheric and related oceanic and hydrologic sciences and the advancement of their professional applications. Founded in 1919, the American Meteorological Society has a membership of more than 11,000 professionals, professors, students, and weather enthusiasts. Some members have attained the designation "Certified Consulting Meteorologist (CCM)", many of whom have expertise in the applied meteorology discipline of atmospheric dispersion modeling. To the general public, however, the AMS is best known for its "Seal of Approval" to television and radio meteorologists.

Sie befasst sich aber auch mit den dieser nahe stehenden Wissenschaften wie z.B. der Ozeanografie und der Hydrologie sowie deren Anwendungsmöglichkeiten. Gegründet wurde die AMS im Jahre 1919 und hat heute über 11.000 Mitglieder.

Amerykańskie Towarzystwo Meteorologiczne (ang. American Meteorological Society, w skrócie AMS) zrzesza około 11,000 naukowców (dane z początku 2006), studentów i osób zawodowo związanych z meteorologią, fizyką atmosfery i pokrewnymi dziedzinami. AMS organizuje około 12 konferencji rocznie. Stowarzyszenie zostało założone w 1919 roku. Członkiem AMS-u może być każda osoba, która ma magisterium lub licencjat z dziedzin pokrewnych meteorologii i fizyce atmosfery. Medale AMS-u przydzielane są za wybitne osiągnięcia w fizyce atmosfery i oceanografii. Najważniejszym wyróżnieniem meteorologicznym jest Medal Carla-Gustafa Rossby, a najważniejszym wyróżnieniem w oceanografii jest Medal im Sverdrupa.
