American Colonization Society

The American Colonization Society (in full, The Society for the Colonization of Free People of Color of America) was an organization that founded Liberia, a colony on the coast of West Africa, in 1823 and transported free blacks there from the United States. During the next 20 years the colony continued to grow and establish economic stability. In 1847, the legislature of Liberia declared itself an independent state.

Die American Colonization Society („Amerikanische Kolonialisierungsgesellschaft“) wurde 1816 auf Initiative des amerikanischen Geistlichen Robert Finley hin gegründet. Die Gründung der Gesellschaft stellte einen Versuch dar, vor allem zwei Gruppen in den USA zufriedenzustellen, die sich in den Anfängen des 19. Jahrhunderts bezüglich der Frage der Sklaverei unversöhnlich gegenüberstanden.
