American Bureau of Shipping

The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) is a classification society. At the end of 2006, ABS was the third largest class society with a classed fleet of over 10,000 commercial vessels and offshore facilities. Other classing societies include Det Norske Veritas (DNV) and Lloyd's Register. ABS was originally formed in 1862 to certify ship captains.

Das American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) mit Firmensitz in Houston, Texas, gegründet im Jahr 1862, ist eine der weltweit führenden Klassifikationsgesellschaften für Schiffe, Ölplattformen und andere maritime Bauten sowie deren Bestandteile an über 400 Standorten in mehr als 100 Ländern.Sie wurde 1862 als „American Shipmasters’ Association“ von John Divine Jones gegründet, 1898 in „American Bureau of Shipping“ umbenannt und 1920 von den USA im United States Government Merchant Marine Act, Section 27, offiziell anerkannt.Als das Flugzeug der American Airlines am 11. September 2001 um 8.46 Uhr in den Nordturm des  World Trade Centers raste, schlug es im 93. Stockwerk nur zwei Stockwerke über dem ABS-Büro ein. Wie durch ein Wunder überlebten alle 12 zu diesem Zeitpunkt dort befindlichen Ingenieure. Erst wenige Monate zuvor war das Unternehmen von der 104. Etage des Südturms (in diesem Stockwerk starben alle Anwesenden) in den 91. Stock des Nordturms gezogen.

American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) - amerykańskie towarzystwo klasyfikacyjne powstałe w 1867 roku, z siedzibą centrali w Houston. Pod obecną nazwą działa od roku 1898. ABS ma uprawnienia do wystawiania dokumentów i świadectw międzynarodowych. Wydaje własną księgę rejestrową zawierającą spis jednostek morskich, śródlądowych i pływających po Wielkich Jeziorach. Ponadto prowadzi systematyczną statystykę stanu floty handlowej świata (dot. statków morskich pow. 1000 RT).

American Bureau of Shipping, nota come ABS,è una società di classifica che è nata dalla necessità per armatori e assicuratori marittimi di nominare un soggetto terzo che valutasse con competenza tecnica la sicurezza delle navi e di conseguenza la loro affidabilità e rischiosità per l'assicuratore. La sua fondazione risale al 1862 e fa parte dell'IACS assieme al Loyds Register, Dernoske Veritas, Bureau Veritas, RINA etc.

American Bureau of Shipping is een classificatiebureau uit de Verenigde Staten met het hoofdkantoor in Houston, Texas. ABS werd in 1862 opgericht en is samen met Lloyd's Register en Det Norske Veritas één van de drie belangrijkste classificatiebureaus.In Londen, Dubai, en Singapore staan regionale hoofdkantoren met kleinere kantoren in nog zo'n 70 landen.
