The Southern United States—commonly referred to as the American South, Dixie, or simply the South— is an area in the southeastern and south-central United States. The region is known for its distinct culture and history, having developed its own customs, musical styles and varied cuisines that have helped distinguish it from the rest of the United States. The South owes its unique heritage to a variety of sources, including Native Americans, early European settlements of Spanish, English, German, French, Scots-Irish and Scottish importation of hundreds of thousands of enslaved Africans, historic dependence on slave labor, presence of a large proportion of African Americans in the population, and the aftermath of the Confederacy after the Civil War.

Die Südstaaten im weiteren Sinn sind eine bestimmte kulturelle Großregion im Südosten der USA. Nach dem United States Census Bureau bestehen die Südstaaten aus insgesamt sechzehn Staaten mit knapp 100 Millionen Einwohnern auf 2.384.143 km². Es handelt sich dabei um jene eher östlichen Bundesstaaten der USA, die südlich der Mason-Dixon-Linie, der Grenze zwischen Pennsylvania und Maryland, liegen und in denen bis 1865 die Sklavenhaltung erlaubt war. Der einwohnerreichste dieser Staaten ist Texas.

Le Sud des États-Unis, souvent appelé le Sud américain (anglais: American South) ou Dixie, constitue une grande région du sud-est et sud-centre des États-Unis. Le Sud a un héritage et une culture assez distincte des autres régions du pays, à cause de son histoire coloniale, son ancienne institution d'esclavage, ses traditions protestantes évangéliques, et son histoire séparatiste pendant la guerre de Sécession.

A Região Sul dos Estados Unidos da América, ou simplesmente Sul, é uma região que cobre toda a região sudeste dos Estados Unidos. Devido à herança cultural e histórica única da região, o Sul desenvolveu suas próprias tradições, literatura, estilos musicais (tais como country ou o jazz) e culinária. A região Sul também se envolveu com diversos problemas enfrentados pelos Estados Unidos como um todo, incluíndo a escravidão, a Guerra Civil Americana e políticas presidenciais (com a maioria dos Presidentes americanos vindos desta região.
