America's Cup Class

The America’s Cup is the most famous and most prestigious regatta and Match Race in the sport of sailing, and the oldest active trophy in international sport, predating the Modern Olympics by 45 years. The America's Cup was formerly known as The Hundred Guinea Cup and was the prize for the race around the Isle of Wight. The sport attracts top sailors and yacht designers because of its long history and prestige as the “Holy Grail” of yachting. Although the most salient aspect of the regatta is its yacht races, it is also a test of boat design, sail design, fundraising, and management skills. The cup, originally offered as the Royal Yacht Squadron cup, is now named after the first yacht to win the trophy, the schooner America. The trophy remained in the hands of the New York Yacht Club of the United States from 1852 or 1857 (when the syndicate that won the Cup donated the trophy to the club) until 1983 when the Cup was won by the challenger, Australia II of Australia, ending the longest winning streak in the history of sport. The skipper of Australia II, John Bertrand, was quoted in saying, “This puts yacht racing back on the map!”.

Der Cupverteidiger ist automatisch qualifiziert und bestimmt das Segelrevier. Der Herausforderer wird durch den Louis Vuitton Cup ermittelt. Schon die Teilnahme am Louis Vuitton Cup setzt großes finanzielles Engagement voraus: Die Budgets der High-Tech-Yachten betragen teilweise über 100 Mio. Dollar. Die Yachten müssen im Land des angemeldeten Teams gebaut werden.

International America's Cup Class (IACC) - międzynarodowa klasa jachtów stworzona specjalnie na potrzeby regat o Puchar Ameryki po aferze, jaką wywołała w 1988 rywalizacja pomiędzy katamaranem "Stars & Stripes" a jednokadłubowym "New Zealand" o długości linii wodnej 90 stóp (27,4 m). W przygotowaniu do tych regat obie drużyny wykorzystały luki w akcie Deed of Gift. Aby zapobiec powtórzeniu podobnej sytuacji stworzono specjalną klasę, której warunki muszą spełniać wszystkie jachty uczestniczące w tych zawodach.

Regaty o Puchar Ameryki (ang. America's Cup) – międzynarodowe  regaty żeglarskie jachtów pełnomorskich, rozgrywane od 1851 r. Historię regat zapoczątkowało zwycięstwo amerykańskiego jachtu America podczas regat wokół wyspy Wight rozegranych 22 sierpnia 1851. Jedyną nagrodą w regatach jest przechodni puchar – ważący około 3  kg srebrny dzbanek ufundowany przez Royal Yacht Squadron w 1851 roku, który kosztował wówczas 100 gwinei. Pierwsze regaty, w których próbowano odebrać ten puchar miały miejsce w 1870 roku. Sam puchar nazywany bywa niekiedy Świętym Graalem lub żartobliwie Starym Dzbankiem (ang. Auld Mug).

L'America's Cup (in italiano Coppa America) è il più famoso trofeo nello sport della vela, nonché il più antico trofeo sportivo del mondo per cui si compete tuttora.Si tratta di una serie di regate di match-race, ovvero tra soli due yacht che gareggiano uno contro l'altro. Le due imbarcazioni appartengono a due Yacht Club differenti, uno rappresentante lo yacht club che detiene la coppa, e l'altro uno yacht club che sfida i detentori del trofeo.La coppa, una brocca d'argento, viene assegnata al vincitore di un incontro al meglio di nove regate.

Lo IACC (International America's Cup Class) è un tipo di imbarcazione a vela specifico per le competizioni di America's Cup. È un monoscafo monoalberato con lunghezza di circa 25 metri, con limiti di tolleranza compresi tra 23 e 25,5 metri. La regola di stazza IACC ammette un range di “dspl” variabile da 16.000 kg a 25.000 kg con imbarcazione a vuoto. Quando si considera l’assetto in navigazione, con il carico di 16 persone di equipaggio e il rappresentante dell’armatore, vele e accessori, il dislocamento complessivo permesso dal regolamento è di circa 27.500 kg.
