Althing

The Alþingi, Anglicized variously as Althing or Althingi, is the national parliament - literally, the "all-thing" - of Iceland. It was founded in 930 at Þingvellir, (the "assembly fields" or "Parliament Plains"), situated some 45 km east of what would later become the country's capital, Reykjavík, and this event marked the beginning of the Icelandic Commonwealth. Even after Iceland's union with Norway, the Althing still held its sessions at Þingvellir until 1799, when it was discontinued for some decades. It was restored in 1844 and moved to Reykjavík, where it has resided ever since. The present parliament building, the Alþingishús, was built in 1881, of hewn Icelandic stone.

Das Althing, isl. Alþingi, ist das Parlament Islands. Es geht bis ins Jahr 930 zurück und ist damit das älteste noch aktive Parlament der Welt (das älteste durchgehend tagende Parlament der Welt ist der seit 979 zurückverfolgbare Tynwald der Isle of Man).

Althing (isl. Alþingi) – zgromadzenie ogólne Islandii, utworzone w 930 r. w Thingvellir (dosłownie Równina Zgromadzenia), położonym 45 km na wschód od Rejkiawiku. Althing obradował w Thingvellir do 1799, kiedy to został zniesiony na kilkadziesiąt lat. Przywrócono go w 1844 i przeniesiono do stolicy, gdzie znajduje się do dziś. Obecny budynek parlamentu, Althingishus, zbudowano w 1881. Za oficjalną siedzibę uznaje się jednak nadal dolinę Thingvellir, gdzie raz do roku obraduje Althing. Althing liczy 63 deputowanych, wybieranych na 4-letnią kadencję. Do 1991 wybierany był jako parlament jednoizbowy, po czym dzielono go na 2 izby w proporcji 1/3 (Izba Wyższa) i 2/3 (Izba Niższa). Obecnie jest parlamentem jednoizbowym. Uznawany jest za najstarszy, dotychczas istniejący, parlament.

Alþingishúsið (Il Parlamento) è una classica struttura del XIX secolo posta sulla piazza Austurvöllur nel centro di Reykjavík, Islanda. Ospita l'Alþingi, il parlamento islandese. L'edificio fu disegnato dall'architetto danese Ferdinand Meldahl e costruito usando dolerite tra il 1880 e il 1881. I rilievi presenti sui timpani delle finestre del primo piano rappresentano gli spiriti di un dragone, un avvoltoio, un gigante e di un toro placati da Ingólfur Arnarson quando sbarcò in Islanda.
