Alternate history literature asks the question, "What if history had developed differently?" Most works in this genre are based in real historical events, yet feature social, geopolitical, or industrial circumstances that developed differently than our own. While to some extent all fiction can be described as "alternate history," the subgenre proper comprises fiction in which a change or point of divergence occurs in the past that causes human society to develop in a way that is distinct from our own.

L'uchronie est une évocation imaginaire dans le temps. En littérature, c'est un genre qui repose sur le principe de la réécriture de l’Histoire à partir de la modification d’un événement du passé. On utilise également l’expression « histoire alternative », directement traduite de l’expression anglophone alternate history. Lorsqu’elle est associée à des moyens techniques qui permettent de remonter dans le temps et donc de modifier le passé, l’uchronie est directement associée au genre de la science-fiction.

Alternativgeschichte ist eine spekulative Geschichte, die ab einem bestimmten Zeitpunkt von der bekannten Geschichte abweicht. Sie wird verwendetin der Literatur und im Film, siehe Alternativweltgeschichte;als eine Art experimenteller Geschichtsforschung, siehe Kontrafaktische Geschichte.

Alternativweltgeschichten sind eine Ausformung des Science-Fiction-Genres und sind unter den Bezeichnungen Allohistoria, Parahistorie, Alternate History oder Uchronia bekannt. In der Geschichtswissenschaft werden dagegen derartige Gedankenspiele, die allerdings Bezug auf die historischen Quellen nehmen, als kontrafaktische Geschichte bezeichnet.

Historia alternatywna to gatunek literacki lub filmowy zaliczany do fantastyki, którego akcja dzieje się w świecie, gdzie historia potoczyła się innym torem niż w naszym; pod tym względem alternatywna historia odpowiada na pytanie "co by było, gdyby...?". Utwory dziejące się w czasach, które dla ich autora były przyszłością, ale które już minęły (np. Rok 1984 George'a Orwella) nie są zaliczane do historii alternatywnej. Historie alternatywne zawierają często również elementy science fiction lub fantasy. Przykładem powieści zaliczanych do historii alternatywnej są Człowiek z Wysokiego Zamku Philipa K. Dicka, Vaterland Roberta Harrisa czy Opowieści o Alvinie Stwórcy Orsona Scotta Carda.
