Alpha AXP

The DEC Alpha, also known as the Alpha AXP, is a 64-bit RISC microprocessor originally developed and fabricated by Digital Equipment Corp (DEC). It was designed to replace the 32-bit VAX processor. It was used in a variety of DEC workstations and servers, eventually forming the basis for almost all of their mid-to-upper-scale lineup. Several third-party vendors also produced Alpha systems, as well as PC compatible form factor motherboards.

Le DEC Alpha, aussi appelé Alpha AXP, est un microprocesseur RISC 64-bits initialement développé et fabriqué par la Digital Equipment Corp. (DEC), qui l'utilisa pour des utilisations propres comme stations de travail et serveurs. Conçu comme un successeur de la gamme d'ordinateurs VAX, il fut livré avec le système d'exploitation VMS, ainsi que l'UNIX de DEC. Plus tard des systèmes d'exploitation open source fonctionnèrent sur l'Alpha, particulièrement GNU/Linux et des distributions UNIX BSD. Microsoft développa pour le processeur jusqu'à Windows NT 4.0 SP6 et ne continua pas le développement pour Alpha après la beta 3 de Windows 2000.

(DEC), która wykorzystała go w linii swoich stacji roboczych i serwerów. Mikroprocesor ten zaprojektowany został jako następca rodziny procesorów komputerów VAX, i umożliwiał pracę z systemem operacyjnym VMS oraz Digital UNIX, odmianą systemu Unix firmy DEC (DEC OSF1). Po przejęciu firmy Digital przez Compaq na procesorach Alpha może operować system Tru64 UNIX (po przejęciu firmy Compaq przez Hewlett-Packard przemianowany na HP Tru64 UNIX).
