Aalst, Belgium
Aalst (, Local dialect: Oilsjt) is a city and municipality on the Dender River, 19 miles northwest from Brussels. It is located in the Flemish province of East Flanders in the Denderstreek. The municipality comprises the city of Aalst itself and the villages of Baardegem, Erembodegem, Gijzegem, Herdersem, Hofstade, Meldert, Moorsel, and Nieuwerkerken. Aalst is crossed by the Molenbeek-Ter Erpenbeek in Aalst and Hofstade. The current mayor of Aalst is Ilse Uyttersprot, from the Christian Democratic and Flemish party. The town has a long-standing feud with Dendermonde (situated north along the same river), which dates back from the Middle Ages.

Alost (en néerlandais Aalst et en flamand Olsjt) est une ville néerlandophone de Belgique située en Région flamande, chef-lieu d'arrondissement en Province de Flandre-Orientale sur la Dendre. Elle se trouve à mi-chemin entre Bruxelles et Gand (dans la zone la plus densément peuplée de Belgique), et est le centre d'une conurbation (avec les communes de Erpe-Mere, Haaltert et Lede) comptant environ 130.000 habitants.

Aalst
Aalst, (franska Alost), stad och kommun i Östflandern, Belgien, 20 km nordväst om Bryssel. 77 007 inv (2005). Staden har textilindustri och bryggerier samt möbel och skofabriker. Den har också handel med humle och oljeväxter, som odlas i trakten. Aalst var tidigare känd för sin hästuppfödning. Staden som växte fram på 1000-talet efter den gamla handelsvägen mellan Brygge och Köln, och har en rad välbevarade medeltidsbygnader. I den gotiska S:t Martinskyrkan, uppförd 1481-1566, finns ett av Europas äldsta klockspel.

Aalst
Aalst (in francese Alost) è una città (77.007 abitanti) del Belgio (Fiandre Orientali), sulla sponda sinitra del fiume Dendre.

Esisteva già in epoca romana. Nel 1046 divenne la capitale dell'omonima contea, costituita da Baldovino V conte di Fiandra con i territori conquistati fra la Schelda e il Dendre, e incorporata nella cosiddetta "Fiandra imperiale", alle dipendenze feudali dell'Impero; Filippo d'Alsazia l'annetè direttamente alla contea di Fiandra (1173); durante le guerre del 13° e 14° sec., la città fu più volte occupata e saccheggiata. Ad Aalst (fr. Alost) nel 1473 Giovanni di Vestfalia e Thierry Maartens pubblicarono la prima opera a stampa uscita in Belgio: il De duobus amantibus di Enea Silvio Piccolomini (Pio II).
