Allahabad (Hindi: इलाहाबाद; Urdu: الاهاباد Ilāhābād) is the English name of a city in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.The name is derived from the one given to the city by the Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1583. The name in Indian languages or in India generally is ; ilāh being Arabic for "(a) god" (in this context from Din-i-Ilahi, the religion founded by Akbar), and "-ābād" is Persian for "place of". The ancient name of the city is Prayāga (Sanskrit for "place of sacrifice", Prayāg in modern Hindi) and is believed to be the spot where Brahma offered his first sacrifice after creating the world. It is one of four sites of the Kumbh Mela, the others being Haridwar, Ujjain and Nasik. It has a position of importance in the Hindu religion and mythology since it is situated at the confluence of the holy rivers Ganga and Yamuna, and Hindu belief says that the invisible Sarasvati River joins here also.

Allahabad (persisch für Stadt Allahs; Hindi इलाहाबाद, ), von Hindus noch heute oft mit dem alten Namen Prayag bezeichnet, ist eine Stadt im indischen Bundesstaat Uttar Pradesh mit 1.078.658 Einwohnern (Stand 1. Januar 2005), am Zusammenfluss von Ganges und Yamuna gelegen. 1583 zerstörte der Mogulkaiser Akbar das alte Prayag – eine der heiligsten Städte der Hindus – und gründete an seiner Stelle Allahabad.

Allahabad miasto w północno-środkowych Indiach, gdzie łączą się dwie święte rzeki hinduizmu: Ganga i Jamuna. Jedno z czterech miast, w których obchodzi się święto Kumbha Mela. Miasto liczy według danych z (2006) 1 094 200 mieszkańców.Jest ośrodkiem handlowym i przemysłowym (gł. maszynowy bawełniany i tytoniowy). Węzeł komunikacyjny na szlaku Delhi-Kalkuta. Uniwersytet założony w 1887 roku. W mieście również znajdują się muzea oraz zabytki m.in. kolumna Aśoki, pałac Akbara z XVI w. Ośrodek religijny, wyznawców hinduizmu; co 12 lat święto Khumbha Mela.

Allahabad (Hindi: इलाहाबाद; Urdu: الاهاباد Ilāhābād) è il nome inglese di una città nel nord dello stato indiano dell'Uttar Pradesh. Fu conosciuta con il nome di Prayāga (sanscrito: il luogo del ‘sacrificio’) fino al 1583, quando l'imperatore mogul Akbar fece distruggere la città esistente e ne fece costruire una nuova battezzandola con il nome di 'Al-Ilhahabad'.
