Alkermes
Alkermes may refer to:Alkermes (company), a pharmaceutical companyAlkermes, a bright red liqueur of nineteenth century Italy of which the kermes "berry", a small parasitic insect Kermes vermilio, was an ingredient. The liqueur also included sugar, rose water and essence of clove, nutmeg and orange blossom added to an ethanol base. Alkermes was a modification of an eighth century tonic confectio alchermes. The tonic included raw silk, apple juice, ground pearls, musk, ambergris, leaf gold, rose-water, cinnamon, sugar and honey. In pre-modern medicine, it was ranked among the best cardiacs, and was frequently used for the palpitation of the heart, or syncope, sometimes for smallpox and measles and a general restorative.
