Alfred Tennyson

Alfred Tennyson, 1st Baron Tennyson (6 August 1809 – 6 October 1892) was Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom and is one of the most popular English poets.Much of his verse was based on classical mythological themes, although In Memoriam was written to commemorate his best friend Arthur Hallam, a fellow poet and classmate at Trinity College, Cambridge who was engaged to Tennyson's sister but died from a cerebral hæmorrhage. One of Tennyson's most famous works is Idylls of the King (1885), a series of narrative poems based entirely on King Arthur and the Arthurian tales, as thematically suggested by Sir Thomas Malory's earlier tales on the legendary king. The work was dedicated to Prince Albert, the husband of Queen Victoria. During his career, Lord Tennyson attempted drama, but his plays enjoyed little success even in his lifetime.

Sir Alfred Tennyson (ur. 6 sierpnia 1809 w Somersby w Lincolnshire, zm. 6 października 1892 w Aldworth w pobliżu Reading) – jeden z najbardziej uznanych poetów angielskich, przedstawiciel postromantyzmu wiktoriańskiego, w 1850 roku uhonorowany tytułem "poeta laureatus".Pierwszy zbiór poezji wydał w 1830 roku. Jego najbardziej znane utwory to "The Lady of Shalott" (Pani z Shalott), pochodzący z drugiego tomu wierszy z 1833 roku oraz "In Memoriam".

La maggior parte dei suoi versi furono ispirati a temi classici o mitologici, anche se la celebre In Memoriam fu scritta per commemorare il suo migliore amico Arthur Hallam, anch’egli poeta e suo compagno di corso al Trinity College di Cambridge, che si era fidanzato con sua sorella ma era improvvisamente morto nel 1833 a causa di un'emorragia cerebrale. Una delle opere più famose di Tennyson sono gli Idilli del re (Idylls of the King) (1885), una raccolta di poesie interamente basate su Re Artù e sul ciclo arturiano, tema ispiratogli dai racconti che Sir Thomas Malory aveva precedentemente scritto sul leggendario sovrano.
