Alexander Aetolus

Alexander Aetolus, of Pleuron in Aetolia, Greek poet and man of letters, the only representative of Aetolian poetry, flourished about 280 BC.When living in Alexandria he was commissioned by Ptolemy Philadelphus to arrange the tragedies and satyric dramas in the library; some ten years later he took up his residence at the court of Antigonus Gonatas, king of Macedonia.His reputation as a tragic poet was so high that he was allotted a place in the Alexandrian tragic Pleiad; we only know the title of one play (Astragalistae.) He also wrote short epics, epigrams and elegies, the considerable fragments of which show learning and eloquence.

Aleksander z Pleuronu (zwany również Aleksandrem Etolskim; ur. ok. 320 p.n.e) - grecki poeta, filolog i bibliotekarz. W okresie 285 - 283 p.n.e. pracował w Bibliotece Aleksandryjskiej, zajmując się na zlecenie Ptolemeusza II Filadelfosa porządkowaniem zbiorów tragedii i dramatów satyrowych. Od 276 p.n.e. przebywał na dworze macedońskim wraz z innym poetą, Aratosem z Soloj. Zaliczono go w poczet Pleias, grupy dramatopisarzy epoki hellenistycznej.

Az alexandriai könyvtárba került, ahol a drámákat rendezgette. Késobb Antigonosz Gonatasz makedón király udvarában élt Aratoszszal és Antagoraszszal együtt. Foképp drámaköltoként ismerték, színpadi muvei azonban nem maradtak ránk. Tudunk „Asztragalisztai” (Kockajátékosok) címu drámájáról, amely feltehetoleg szatírjáték volt és Patroklosz ifjúkoráról szólt. Öt hexameter maradt fenn „Halieusz” (Tengeri halász) címu epikus költeményébol, a mu Glaukosz tengeristennel, a halászok oltalmazójával foglalkozott. Euripidészrol szóló muvének töredéke a nagy tragédiakölto életrajzának fontos forrása.
