Aleppo ( ['ḥalab], ) is a city in northern Syria, capital of the Aleppo Governorate. The city has a population of around 1.9 million, making it the second largest city in Syria after Damascus. Aleppo is one of the oldest inhabited cities in history. It knew human settlement since the eleventh millennium B.C. through the residential houses which were discovered in Al-Qaramel Hill. It was known to antiquity as Khalpe, Khalibon, to the Greeks as Beroea (Veroea), and to the Turks as Halep; during the French Mandate, Alep was used. It occupies a strategic trading point midway between the sea and the Euphrates; initially, it was built on a small group of hills in a wide fertile valley on both sides of the river Quweiq (قويق). The province or governorate extends around the city for over 16,000 km² and has around 3.7 million inhabitants.

Aleppo (; armenisch ) ist der Name einer Stadt in Nordsyrien. Aleppo ist gleichzeitig Hauptstadt des gleichnamigen Gouvernements Aleppo.Die Stadt hat um die 2,1 Millionen Einwohner (2005) und wird für gewöhnlich als die zweitgrößte Stadt Syriens nach Damaskus angesehen. Sie ist eine der ältesten Städte in der Region und nimmt einen strategischen Punkt zwischen dem Mittelmeer und dem Euphrat ein. Ursprünglich wurde sie auf einer Hügelgruppe in einer breiten fruchtbaren Senke auf beiden Seiten des Flusses Quwaiq erbaut. Die Mehrheit der Bevölkerung bilden Araber und Kurden, sowie in geringerem Maße Türken, Armenier und andere kleinere Volksgruppen. Etwa 10 er Einwohner sind Christen verschiedener Konfessionen.

Haleb) - miasto w pn.-zach. Syrii, około 50 km na południe od granicy z Turcją, w połowie drogi między Eufratem a wybrzeżem Morza Śródziemnego, na krańcach Pustyni Syryjskiej, w okolicy półpustynnej, o ostrym klimacie. Siedziba władz prowincji Halab. Drugie (za Damaszkiem) co do wielkości miasto Syrii - 1,4 mln mieszkańców (1990), 1,7 mln mieszkańców (1999), 2,0 mln mieszkańców (szacunek z 2003). Jedno z najstarszych nieprzerwanie zamieszkanych miast Bliskiego Wschodu - od co najmniej 1800 r.p.n.e. Zamieszkane głównie przez Arabów, dość liczni są Turcy i Ormianie, oprócz nich mieszkają w Aleppo Grecy, Kurdowie i Żydzi. Ośrodek przemysłu włókienniczego i spożywczego, ośrodek tkactwa dywanów. Jedno z większych centrów handlowych Bliskiego Wschodu. Węzeł komunikacyjny - skrzyżowanie szlaków kolejowych i drogowych, międzynarodowy port lotniczy, przez miasto przebiega rurociąg z Homsu do Latakii. Ośrodek nauki i kultury - uniwersytet, muzułmańska szkoła teologiczna, szkoła muzyczna. Liczne zabytki architektury, głównie kultury arabskiej - cytadela Kalat Halab, medresa al-Halawija z XII wieku, meczet Omajjadów z VIII-XI wieku, karawanseraje, łaźnie tureckie. Do osobliwości należy wielki bazar (suk).

La sua provincia si estende attorno alla città per oltre 16.000 km² e conta circa 3,7 milioni di abitanti.
