Alcalá de Henares , meaning Citadel on the river Henares, is a Spanish city whose historical centre is one of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites, and one of the first bishoprics founded in Spain. Located in the Autonomous Community of Madrid, 35 km northeast of the city of Madrid, at an altitude of 588 metres (1929 ft) above sea level, it has a population of around 200,000, the second largest of the region after the Spanish capital itself. The city is generally known simply as "Alcalá", but "de Henares" is often appended to differentiate it from a dozen cities sharing the name Alcalá (from the Arabic word al-qal'a القلعة for fortification or citadel). The Latin name, Complutum, is sometimes used also and the city is capital of its namesake region, Comarca de Alcalá.

Eine der ältesten Universitäten Europas - die im Jahre 1836 nach Madrid verlegt wurde - Universität Alcalá, und ein historischer Stadtkern zeichnen Alcalá aus. Dies wurde 1998 durch die Aufnahme von Altstadt und alter Universität in die Liste des Weltkulturerbes der UNESCO bestätigt. Der Name der Stadt leitete sich aus dem Arabischen ab (Al-Kala = die Festung, Burg), sowie vom Henares, dem durch die Stadt fließenden Fluss. Die Stadt zählt 204.000 Einwohner (2006) und liegt am östlichen Rand der Agglomeration Madrid (Área Metropolitana de Madrid mit 5,4 Mio. Einwohnern). Sie ist Sitz eines römisch-katholischen Bischofs.

Alcalá de Henares est une commune d'Espagne, située dans la province de Madrid  (Communauté autonome de Madrid). Sa population est d'environ 200.000 habitants (2004) et a l'honneur de figurer au Patrimoine Mondial de l'UNESCO depuis 1998. Elle est aussi la ville natale de plusieurs illustres personnages, parmi lesquels : les saints Just et Pasteur (†304), Miguel de Cervantes, auteur de Don Quichotte, et Manuel Azaña, dernier président de la Deuxième République espagnole. Alcalá fait partie de la région du Corredor del Henares, dont elle est la capitale.
