] Acre (or Akko) ( akko; akka) , is a city in the Western Galilee district of northern Israel. It is situated on a low promontory at the northern extremity of the Haifa Bay. According to the Israel Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), Acre had a population 45,800 at the end of 2005. From ancient times, Acre was regarded as the "key to Palestine" because of its strategic coastal location.
