German Academy of Sciences Berlin
The German Academy of Sciences Berlin was the most important
academy in the
German Democratic Republic. It was founded in
1946 and continued the long tradition of the
Prussian Academy of Sciences. It was first called 'German Academy of Sciences at Berlin' (Deutsche Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Berlin) and was then renamed 'Academy of Sciences of the GDR' (Akademie der Wissenschaften der DDR) in 1972, once the division of Germany was accepted as a permament state of affairs entailing mutual recognition by the two Germanys. Its successor in 1990 was the Leibniz Society.
