Agglomeration

In the study of human settlements, an agglomeration is an extended city or town area comprising the built-up area of a central place (usually a municipality) and any suburbs linked by continuous urban area. In France, INSEE the French Statistical Institute, translate it as "Unité urbaine" which means continuous urbanized area. However, because of differences in definitions of what does and does not constitute an "agglomeration", as well as variations and limitations in statistical or geographical methodology, it can be problematic to compare different agglomerations around the world. It may not be clear, for instance, whether an area should be considered to be a satellite and part of an agglomeration, or a distinct entity in itself.

Une agglomération est un ensemble urbain composé en général de plusieurs villes interconnectées qui gèrent leurs projets en commun (transports, déchets, projets de réhabilitation de quartiers, etc.). Une agglomération est, au sens large, définie comme une ville munie de ses banlieues : une « toile urbaine ».

Eine Agglomeration (lat. agglomerare „fest anschließen“) ist nach Definition der UNO von 1998 eine Kernstadt, die ein suburbanes Umland oder zumindest dicht besiedeltes Gebiet besitzt, das außerhalb der Stadtgrenzen liegt, aber direkt an sie angrenzt. Eine solche Agglomeration besteht aus einer oder mehreren Städten und ihren Vorstadtgemeinden (sog. Speckgürtel). Die Agglomeration entspricht also der „Stadt“ im rein geographischen Sinne, ohne Berücksichtigung von administrativen Grenzen.

Aglomeracja (z łac. agglomeratio – nagromadzenie) – w urbanistyce jest to obszar o intensywnej zabudowie, charakteryzujący się również dużym zagęszczeniem ludności przebywającej na danym terenie periodycznie (np. w ciągu dnia) lub stale. Aglomeracje charakteryzują się dużym przepływem osób i towarów oraz znaczną wymianą usług. W brzmieniu bardziej potocznym aglomeracja jest skupiskiem sąsiadujących ze sobą miast i wsi, które stanowią wspólny organizm, poprzez zintegrowanie lub uzupełnianie się rozmaitych form infrastruktury tych miejscowości oraz wzajemne wykorzystywanie potencjałów, którymi te miejscowości dysponują.

Agglomerazione è un termine tecnico usato in alcuni ambiti, come l'urbanistica e la geografia urbana, per indicare una città estesa che comprende il tessuto costruito da un comune centrale di grosse dimensioni, unito ai sobborghi e alle città satellite che lo circondano.
