For the Danish footballer see Daniel Agger Agger is the Roman word for an embankment or rampart, from the Latin aggero meaning to heap up, make a mound.It is especially used for the raised and cambered embankment carrying a Roman road. The agger was constructed by excavating the line of the road, building a firm foundation, refilling and compressing the soil, adding more soil from digging drainage ditches (fossa) on one or both sides of the road, then surfacing with graded layers of stone and cobbles. The course of a Roman road can often be traced today by the distinctive line of the agger across the landscape.

L'aggere è un terrapieno difensivo ottenuto con lo scavo di un fossato esterno.Trattandosi, di fatto, di un accumulo di terra riportata, gli agenti atmosferici tendono a far nuovamente scivolare la terra nel fossato, annullando quindi, col tempo, qualsiasi potenzialità difensiva. Ne deriva pertanto la necessità di un rinforzo di contenimento che impedisca l'erosione della massa di terra. La costruzione di muri o palizzate difensive con tale scopo è quindi subordinata alla struttura d'insieme, sebbene il termine aggere sia rimasto anche quando il terrapieno ha assunto, rispetto al muro, una funzione secondaria.
