Agent Purple

Agent Purple is the code name for a powerful herbicide and defoliant used by the U.S. military in its Herbicidal Warfare program during the Vietnam War. The name comes from the purple stripe painted on the barrels to identify the contents. It was one of the so-called "rainbow herbicides" that included the more infamous Agent Orange.

L'Agent Pourpre est le nom de code d'un puissant herbicide et défoliant utilisée par l'armée américaine dans son programme Herbicidal Warfare pendant la guerre du Vietnam. Son nom vient de la bande pourpre peinte sur les barils pour identifier le contenu. Il faisait parti des "herbicides arc-en-ciel", parmi lesquels on retrouve entre autre le tristement célèbre Agent Orange. L'Agent Pourpre a été utilisé seulement dans les premiers temps des opérations d'épandage, entre 1962 et 1964. Au final, en proportion, peu d'agent pourpre ont été utilisé.

Agent Purple ist ein Gemisch von 50 % 2,4-Dichlorphenoxyessigsäure-n-butylester, 30 % 2,4,5-Trichlorphenoxyessigsäure-n-butylester und 20 % 2,4,5-Trichlorphenoxyessigsäure-isobutylester. Es richtet sich gegen Blätterpflanzen und soll auf Feldern das unerwünschte Auftreten von Bäumen und Sträuchern verhindern (Unkrautvernichtungsmittel). Agent Purple hat keine ausgesprochene Langzeitwirkung; die Aufnahme von ca. 5 g gilt als tödlich. Die Verunreinigung mit 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlordibenzodioxin führt zu Erbgutschädigung bei den betroffenen Personen.

Agent Purple (mieszanka fioletowa) to kodowa nazwa silnego herbicydu i defoliantu używanego przez Siły Zbrojne Stanów Zjednoczonych w czasie wojny wietnamskiej. Był to jeden z tak zwanych "tęczowych herbicydów", do których zaliczano także bardziej niesławny Agent Orange.Mieszanka fioletowa jest chemicznie podobna do bardziej znanej mieszanki pomarańczowej, składającej się z herbicydów  2,4-D i 2,4,5-T. Zostało później odkryte, że mieszanki pomarańczowa i fioletowa były skażone różną ilością tetrachlorodibenzodioksyny (TCDD), dioksyny, która jest substancją toksyczną i zalegającą. Skażenie to było efektem ubocznym procesu produkcyjnego 2,4,5-T. Agent Purple zawiera ponad trzy razy więcej dioksyn niż Agent Orange - 45 części na milion, podczas gdy Agent Orange tylko 13 na milion.
