A form of organization commonly used by foreign banks to enter the U.S.
market. An agency bank cannot accept deposits or extend
loans in its own name; it acts as agent for the parent bank. It is also the financial institution that
issues ADRs to the general
market.
A foreign bank doing business in the United States as an agent for its parent bank; such banks arrange letters of credit financing on behalf of the parent but do not accept deposits or make loans in their own name.
