Afġānistān, officially the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan (Persian: جمهوری اسلامی افغانستان), is a landlocked country that is located in the heart of Asia. It is variously designated within Central Asia or the Middle East. It has religious, ethno-linguistic, and geographic links with most of its neighbors. It is bordered by Pakistan in the south and east, Iran in the west, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan in the north, and China in the far northeast. The name Afghanistan means the "Land of Afghans."

L'Afghanistan, la République islamique d'Afghanistan (pachto : د افغانستان اسلامي جمهوریت, persan : جمهوری اسلامی افغانستان) pour les usages officiels, est un pays d'Asie centrale sans accès à la mer entouré du Turkménistan, de l'Ouzbékistan, du Tadjikistan, de la Chine, du Pakistan et de l'Iran. Depuis l'invasion soviétique en 1979 et des années de guerre civile, l'Afghanistan connaît un appauvrissement considérable, mais aujourd'hui les choses ont beaucoup évolué et le pays se modernise très rapidement, malgré l'instabilité des régions sous influence des Talibans.

L'Afghanistan è uno stato (647.500 km², 31.889.923 abitanti stimati al luglio 2007, capitale Kabul) dell'Asia centrale.Confina ad ovest con l'Iran, a sud e a est con il Pakistan, a nord con il Turkmenistan, l'Uzbekistan e il Tagikistan e con la Cina nella regione più a est della nazione (corridoio del Vacan). Tra la caduta dei talebani in seguito all'invasione statunitense e la riunione del gran consiglio per la stesura della nuova costituzione, l'Afghanistan veniva indicato dall'Occidente come Stato provvisorio islamico dell'Afghanistan. Con la sua nuova costituzione il paese viene ora ufficialmente chiamato Repubblica Islamica dell'Afghanistan. L'attuale presidente è Hamid Karzai, in carica dal dicembre 2004.
