Afferent fiber or nerve cell

a neuron or its fiber that conducts action potentials from the periphery to the central nervous system (primary afferent fiber) or to higher centers within the central nervous system (secondary or higher order afferent neurons). Often, sensory is used as a synonym for afferent.
