Afar Region

Afar is one of the nine ethnic divisions (kililoch) of Ethiopia, and contains the homeland of the Afar people. Formerly known as Region 2, its current capital is Asayita; a new capital named Semera on the paved Awash - Asseb highway is under construction. The Afar Depression, also known as the Danakil depression, the lowest point in Ethiopia and one of the lowest in Africa, is located in the north of the Region. The southern part consists of the valley of the Awash River, which empties into a string of lakes along the Ethiopian-Djibouti border. Other notable landmarks include the Awash and Yangudi Rassa National Parks.

L'Afar (Ge'ez: አፋር) est une des neuf divisions ethniques (kililoch) de l'Éthiopie. Situé à l'Est du pays, il a une superficie de 96 707 km². Son chef-lieu est Assayta. Un nouveau chef-lieu, Semera, est actuellement en construction sur la route reliant Awash à Assab.Cette région de l'Afar, connait un zone de dépression, cette zone est appelée zone de dépression de l'Afar. Il s'agit de la zone la plus basse d'Afrique, 174m sous le niveau de la mer. Dans cette zone on retrouve des manifestations volcaniques telles que des lacs de lave mais aussi de nombreuses failles.

Afar ist eine von neun Regionen in Äthiopien. Die Bevölkerung besteht überwiegend aus der Titularnation der Afar. Die Provinz befindet sich in der Danakil-Senke, einer der heißesten und unwirtlichsten Gegenden der Welt. Die Hauptstadt ist heute Semera. Bis 1888 existierte ein Sultanat Aussa (Hauptort Hadele Gabo), welches das stärkste der Afar-Emirate war, ohne jedoch die anderen tatsächlich dominieren zu können. Seine Grenzen entsprechen etwa der heutigen Afar-Region entlang dem Fluss Awash, bis 1869 gehörte sogar die Hafenstadt Assab dazu. Heute gehört Aussa teilweise zu Eritrea, der Rest und Harar zu Äthiopien, ebenso wie die Danakil-Region. Afar bevölkern (zusammen mit Issa-Somalis) zudem auch Dschibuti und Ogaden.
