Advanced Simulation and Computing Program

The Advanced Simulation and Computing Program (formerly called Accelerated Strategic Computing Initiative, or ASCI) is a supercomputing initiative of the United States government, created to help the maintenance of the United States nuclear arsenal after the 1992 moratorium on nuclear testing.Some of the program's supercomputers are on the TOP500 list.

Das Advanced Simulation and Computing Program (ASC), früher bekannt unter dem Namen Accelerated Strategic Computing Initiative (ASCI) ist ein Programm der US-Regierung, das 1995 begonnen wurde und in erster Linie zur Simulation von Kernwaffentests dient, die seit 1992 einem Moratorium der US-Regierung unterliegen. Das Programm untersteht der Nuklearsicherheitsbehörde (National Nuclear Security Administration/NNSA) des US-Energieministeriums und verfügt über ein Jahresbudget von rund 600 Mio. US-Dollar. Das Programm ist besonders durch die TOP500-Liste der weltweit schnellsten Supercomputer bekannt, wo Rechner des Programms regelmäßig Spitzenplätze belegen. An dem Programm nehmen die Forschungszentren Los Alamos National Laboratory/LANL (Los Alamos, New Mexico), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory/LLNL (Livermore, Kalifornien), und Sandia National Laboratories/SNL (Albuquerque, New Mexico) sowie mehrere amerikanische Universitäten teil. L'Advanced Simulation and Computing Program (precedentemente chiamato Accelerated Strategic Computing Initiative, o ASCI) è un progetto statunitense volto allo sviluppo di supercomputer di nuova generazione per poter sostituire i test nucleari nel sottosuolo con simulazioni svolte dai supercomputer. I supercomputer secondo il progetto dovrebbero simulare anche l'invecchiamento dell'arsenale atomico statunitense in modo da migliorare e razionalizzare la manutenzione dello stesso. Il progetto venne creato dopo la moratoria del 1992 sugli esperimenti atomici.
