Par exemple, un sucrant est utilisé comme un additif au goût dans la nourriture. Dans l'industrie pétrolière, un additif est un produit chimique qu'on ajoute à un produit raffiné. Par exemple, le carburant issu du raffinage n'est pas coloré. Pour distinguer l'essence ordinaire du supercarburant, on ajoute un colorant pour les distinguer l'un de l'autre.
