Additive synthesis

Additive synthesis is a technique of audio synthesis which creates musical timbre.The timbre of an instrument is composed of multiple harmonics or partials, in different quantities, that change over time. Additive synthesis emulates such timbres by combining numerous waveforms pitched to different harmonics, with a different amplitude envelope on each, along with inharmonic artifacts. Usually, this involves a bank of oscillators tuned to multiples of the base frequency. Often, each oscillator has its own customizable volume envelope, creating a realistic, dynamic sound that changes over time.

Die additive Synthese ist eine Methode der synthetischen Klangerzeugung und wird beispielsweise in elektronischen Musikinstrumenten wie Synthesizern und Zugriegelorgeln eingesetzt. Bei der additiven Synthese wird der Klang im Gegensatz zur subtraktiven Synthese nicht dadurch erzeugt, dass man aus einem obertonreichen Spektrum die unerwünschten Bestandteile ausfiltert, sondern indem man den Klang durch Zusammenstellen der gewünschten harmonischen Teiltöne erstellt.

In de audio is additieve synthese een techniek om een klank met een bepaalde klankkleur te maken, door een aantal basistonen bij elkaar op te tellen.De klank van muziekinstrumenten of stemmen bestaat uit een samenstelling van verschillende tonen. Deze tonen zijn vaak harmonisch, maar niet noodzakelijk: heldere instrumenten zoals een fluit produceren boventonen die een geheel aantal keren de grondtoon zijn, maar slagwerk of een klokkenspel doen dit niet. Additieve synthese imiteert klanken door het in verschillende mate, variërend in de tijd, optellen van tonen, zowel harmonisch als niet-harmonisch.
