Adaptive radiation

Adaptive radiation describes the rapid speciation of a single or a few species to fill many ecological niches. This is an evolutionary process driven by natural selection, successful and novel adaptation, and sometimes by mutation (heritable/genetic variation).

Unter adaptiver Radiation (lat. adaptare - anpassen; radiatus - strahlend) versteht man in der Evolutionsbiologie die Auffächerung (Radiation) einer wenig spezialisierten Art bei Herausbildung spezifischer Anpassungen (Adaptationen) an die vorhandenen Umweltverhältnisse in viele stärker spezialisiertere Arten und damit verbunden die Ausnutzung unterschiedlicher, vorher nicht gebildeter ökologischer Nischen.

Radiacja adaptacyjna (radiacja przystosowawcza) to ewolucyjne różnicowanie się organizmów należących do jednej linii rodowej. W wyniku radiacji adaptacyjnej z jednego gatunku powstaje wiele innych, przystosowanych do życia w różnych środowiskach. Klasycznym przykładem radiacji adaptacyjnej są zięby Darwina.
