Acute (medicine)
In medicine, an acute disease is a disease with either or both of:
  1. a rapid onset, as in acute infection
  2. a short course (as opposed to a chronic course).

Acute medicine
Acute medicine is that part of internal medicine concerned with the immediate and early specialist management of adult patients with a wide range of medical conditions who present in hospital as emergencies. It developed in the United Kingdom in the early 2000s as a dedicated field of medicine, together with the establishment of acute medical units in numerous hospitals. Acute medicine is not identical to emergency medicine, which is limited to the management of people attending the emergency department.

Akut
"Akut" är även förkortning av akutmottagning.
Akut i medicinsk betydelse avser att ett sjukdomstillstånd har uppstått snabbt, varat en kort tid samt att den drabbade personen försämras och är i behov av behandling så snart som möjligt.

Akut
Az orvostudomány akutnak vagy hevenynek nevezi azokat a betegségeket, amelyek:
  1. gyorsan alakulnak ki, és/vagy
  2. rövid lefolyásúak (ellentétben a krónikus avagy idült lefolyásúakkal).

Ez a melléknév számos betegség leírásának része, és ezért azok nevében is gyakran szerepel pl. súlyos akut respiratorikus szindróma, akut leukémia.

Az 'akut' szó használata a hétköznapi nyelvben más, ott gyakran 'súlyos' az értelme. Ez azonban egy másik tulajdonság.
