Radioactive decay

Radioactive decay is the process in which an unstable  atomic nucleus  loses energy by emitting radiation in the form of particles or electromagnetic waves. This decay, or loss of energy, results in an atom of one type, called the parent nuclide transforming to an atom of a different type, called the daughter nuclide. For example: a carbon-14 atom (the "parent") emits radiation and transforms to a nitrogen-14 atom (the "daughter.") This is a random process on the atomic level, in that it is impossible to predict when a particular atom will decay, but given a large number of similar atoms, the decay rate, on average, is predictable.

Radioactivité
La radioactivité, terme inventé vers 1898 par Marie Curie, est un phénomène physique naturel au cours duquel des noyaux atomiques instables se désintègrent en dégageant de l'énergie sous forme de rayonnements divers, pour se transformer en des noyaux atomiques plus stables. Les rayonnements ainsi émis sont appelés, selon le cas, des rayons α, des rayons β ou des rayons γ.

Radioaktivität
Unter Radioaktivität (von lat. radius, Strahl) oder radioaktivem Zerfall oder Kernzerfall versteht man die Eigenschaft instabiler Atomkerne, sich spontan unter Energieabgabe umzuwandeln. Die freiwerdende Energie wird in Form ionisierender Strahlung, nämlich energiereicher Teilchen und/oder Gammastrahlung, abgegeben.

Radioaktywnosc
Radioaktywność – zdolność jąder atomowych do rozpadu promieniotwórczego, który najczęściej jest związany z emisją cząstek alfacząstek beta oraz promieniowania gamma (promieniowanie elektromagnetyczne o bardzo dużej energii).Szczególnym rodzajem promieniotwórczości jest  rozszczepienie jądra atomowego, podczas którego radioaktywne jądro rozpada się na dwa fragmenty oraz emituje liczne cząstki, między innymi neutrony, które mogą indukować kolejne rozszczepienia. Zjawisko takiej reakcji łańcuchowej jest wykorzystane w elektrowniach jądrowych oraz w bombach jądrowych.

Radioattività
La radioattività, o decadimento radioattivo, è un insieme di processi tramite i quali dei nuclei atomici instabili (nuclidi) emettono particelle subatomiche per raggiungere uno stato di stabilità.Ogni atomo è formato da un nucleo contenente protoni e neutroni, e da un certo numero di elettroni che gli orbitano intorno. Essendo tutti carichi positivamente i protoni tendono a respingersi per via della forza di Coulomb e, se non ci fossero altre forze a tenerli uniti, i nuclei non sarebbero stabili. In effetti i nuclei atomici sono tenuti coesi dalla cosiddetta forza nucleare forte. Questa forza richiede anche la presenza dei neutroni per manifestarsi. Quando le forze all'interno del nucleo non sono bilanciate (ovvero il nucleo è instabile) questo tende spontaneamente a raggiungere uno stato stabile attraverso l'emissione di una o più particelle.
