Activities of Daily Living

n. activities ordinarily performed day by day by the average person in a society, personal care activities of an average person essential for everyday living (such as eating, dressing, bathing and other personal care activities)

Activities of daily living (ADLs),are "the things we normally do in daily living including any daily activity we perform for self-care (such as feeding ourselves, bathing, dressing, grooming), work, homemaking, and leisure." Health professionals routinely refer to the ability or inability to perform ADLs as a measurement of the functional status of a person. This measurement is useful for assessing the elderly, the mentally ill, those with chronic diseases, and others, in order to evaluate what type of health care services an individual may need. There are many tools to use for evaluation, such as the Katz ADL scale, and the Lawton IADL scale.

Assisted Living or Assisted Living Facilities (ALF) usually refers to a non-institutionalized facility that is used by people who are not able to live on their own, but do not yet need the level of continuous nursing care that a nursing home offers [1].
