Passivity is a property of engineering systems, most commonly used in electronic engineering and control systems. A passive component, depending on field, may either refer to a component that consumes (but does not produce) energy, or to a component that is incapable of
power gain. A component that is not passive is called an active component. An electronic circuit consisting entirely of passive components is called a passive circuit (and has the same properties as a passive component).

A device that requires a source of energy for its
operation and has an
output that is a function of present and past
input signals. Note: Examples of active devices include controlled
power supplies, transistors, LEDs, amplifiers, and transmitters.
